Deconstructing Rove's line of attack
So TPM had a post today that the operative part of Rove's attack on Obama was the line "beautiful woman" thus raising the specter of scary black guy after country-club women.
But I think the operative word is "sneering." As Rick Perlestein and Thomas Frank have pointed out, the key to the Republican's success with the mass of voters is the resentment they feel for people who they believe are looking down at them.
Bill Clinton's ability to "Feel your pain" did a lot to disarm that. Working-class white people didn't think Clinton (who went to Georgetown, Yale, and Oxford) was sneering at them (they thought Hillary was).
So yes, of course Karl and the boys will get racial, and if they can dig up a wronged white girl from Obama's college or high school or something, they'll go nuts. But this time around, the message is clear.
It's not "Obama and you, rich white Republican, are in the club and he's sneering at you."
It's "Obama's in the club, and you, poor white Republican, are not." ¶ 1:13 PM 0 comments
