A-Z of Failure...
Those geniuses at The Daily Show
hit it on the head here.
Preach it, Lloyd
"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed... or buy anything sold or processed... or process anything sold, bought or processed... or repair anything sold, bought or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."
Let's Review: Rationales for "Bush Bashing" re: Katrina
- Gutting FEMA is bad.
- Underfunding critical levees in high-population areas is bad (note: this is also Congress' fault)
- Piss-poor response time to a crisis that anyone could have predicted is bad.
Paul Krugman had an interesting observation yesterday. He said that what we've seen here is the practical effect of the self-fulfilling position that government is bad at providing essential services.
There are some things that only government can do, and it needs to be able to do them extremely well.
It is interesting to note that NYC Mayor Bloomberg and Commish Ray Kelly have been in front of the cameras this week reassuring NYC that even if the Feds are AWOL, they have a plan. There was also a great article in the New Yorker a while ago about the NYPD's anti-terrorist program which is apparently a million times better than the FBI and CIAs.
I'm starting to come around to this "states rights"/"federalism"
thing. Screw the federal govt -- all they do is take blue state tax
revenue and give it to farmers, the elderly, and pork-projects in
the red states. I say keep the money on the coasts, and give the
NYPD nuclear weapons.
